Good copy bad copy

In this video we learn about the record industry and its down fall. We are informed that over the past 6 years we have lost 7 billion dollars within the record industry. Jobs have also been lost, and stores have been closed. This has occurred as most the music downloaded is consumed illegally.

spooks anaylsis

We watched a clip from Spooks and had to analyse nine different camera angles.

Double page ideas

Here are some ideas for my double page spread. i like the colours used in the bottom one as they contrast well with the black and they stand out, although i do like the black and white idea as i think the writing works really well against a white background. Jamelia's double page looks really effective with her image showing through. i think this could work well on my double page. The top one also looks really effective with the collage of images. i think it looks interesting and attractive.

Background image ideas

These were two ideas that im considering for my front page. i like the first one as its got colour and it stands out but i think it would better if i was to cut my image out. however if i do this it will have to cover more the front page which could become an issue.

Todays lesson

In today's lesson we all evaluated each others work and gave them feedback. We did this so we know what to improve on and to also get different opinions off different students.
My targets are to complete my article and to the correct register. I also need to make sure that i use the same use of fonts throughout so it follows the same theme. Especially the mast heads. I found out the simpler the font the more effective. I also need to consider a different style of image for my front cover as it is classed as inappropriate. This is because she is wearing very little in her photo, although i framed it so it does not fall into the male gaze theory, as she is looking away with her head down and is using her arms to cover herself. Therefore she is not inviting the reader in a seductive way. However people still might find this inappropriate as she is wearing little clothing. This image fits with the theme of trance and is suitable for the theme but is not seen suitable for an A level piece of work. A mid shot would look effective and i need to identify what style would look good and that would go with the theme of my magazine. A magazine we analysed today was framed well and had an inviting look. This is the look i want to create.

Warp records was founded in Sheffield in 1989 by Steve Beckett and the late Rob Mitchell, from their experiences working at the FON record store, alongside producer Robert Gordon. The label (whose name was chosen because the original name, 'Warped Records' was difficult to distinguish over the telephone) soon became home to artists who would be highly influential in electronic music.
The first album released by Warp was Sweet Exorcist's C.C.E.P. in 1991. In the same year Robert Gordon left Warp acrimoniously. Warp has worked with many artists including Maximo park, Lfo, Nice nice, Dj mujava, Vincent Gallo, Jamie Lidell, and Pivot.

In 1999 the label released Warp 10: Influences, Classics, Remixes, a compilation spanning six discs, featuring early acid house and techno music that influenced the label and its artists, as well as classic tracks from Warp's back catalog, and new remixes of Warp material. The collection celebrated the label's tenth anniversary.Later In 2000 the label moved its operation to London along with its physical music and merchandise store Warpmart. In 2001 Co-founder Rob Mitchell was diagnosed with cancer, He died later that year.

Warp films was set up in 1999 with funding from NESTA. It is based in Sheffield, England with a further office in London. At present there have been four releases on Warp Films: My Wrongs by Chris Morris, which won the Best Short Film award at the BAFTA Awards, and Shane Meadows's films Dead Man's Shoes and This Is England.

In April 2008, Australian film distributor Madman Entertainment announced "a collaboration" with Warp Films. Warp and Madman plan to make "at least 2 films together over the next 3 years."

Warp have recently created 'Bleep' which is a download store, where songs, albums, and tickets can be purchased and listened to.

Market Research

I will aim my questions at a target audience of 18-30 as this is the general age that tend to listen to trance music. It would be pointless me asking old aged people as they couldn'nt relate to this genre, and would therefore be a waste of time. I am going to present my questions on a sheet which i will give to out, i want the questions to be answered onnominously so that the answers are honest, and hopefully constructive. This way i can get more realistic feedback.

Mock up coursework

I am pleased with my first mock up of my front page. I like the background picture because it makes the writing and colour stand out more as it is black and white. I chose to photograph this picture in this style as many trance/dance/house/progressive music magazines and Cd's etc use tasteful pictures like the one above. As at most concerts their is a lot of jumping and dancing you get hot and sweaty which is why this theme of 'less clothing' is used. I told my model to stand to the side so the picture is less provocative and is not acting in the 'male gaze' theory, hence the reason she is not looking out making eye contact. I originally had the title of my magazine as hands up, but when designing the master head i found it took up too much of the magazine and the title 'UP' would look more effective. The word up symbolises the action of putting your hands up at a concert, people also tend to look up to the stage/set. When at a concert your mood and feelings also become happier, they go 'up'. I used a choice of three colours on the front because although dance music is usually a mixture of bright colours i didn't want the front of the magazine to look too over crowded. i desired it to be interesting but simple.

I chose to have a picture of Tiesto at the top on my mock up as i am hoping to get the same style of picture myself to use on my final piece. The effect on the picture also adds more detail which enables the contents to look more attractive. I also included a picture of a event in Goa which is very common for trance festivals. As i am including events in my magazine i thought this would attract the reader as everybody is interested in events. As my double page spread is on Georgina i thought it would be necessary to include on the contents page, so i chose a picture of her which is different to the one I'm using on the double page spread. I also like the black background on the contents and colour images and also colour text as at concerts/parties etc the lights are out and there is colour from strobe lights etc.

For my double page spread i chose to use the picture picture of Georgina's back as i think it is a creative picture and it grabs the attention of the reader as they turn the page. The master head 'Georgina' has green lines added into it, as it adds extra colour and it also looks quite tribal, which relates back to the Goa events. I left the right hand side black with one picture on because although the spread is on her, if i added to many pictures their wouldn't be enough room for a detailed interview.

Image ideas

In this image i like the way a vinly disc has been used to capture and centre the attention to the models face. i think this is very creative yet simple. I also like the way the image has been made brighter in the middle to highlight his face.

This image really appealed to me. the way the face is repeated again makes it look really effective and the style of the image is very modern.

I like the design of this magazine and how its been layed out. its very simple yet effective. The font used for the writing looks and suits the style of the magazine as the red hair is quite funky so the font fits in.

The black and white effect makes this image look very professional. The leg hanging over the bath, with her clothes and shoes on obviously highlights the fact that she is not actually in the bath... in which case shes posing. I like the way its very un-realistic.

I really liked this image when i first saw it. It caught my eye as it is a close up of her face. the eye makeup and effect on the eyes really stood out to me and i think it looks amazing. The way her hair curls round her face also draw more attention to her face and structure. The pattern on her head also adds to that unique appeal that the photographer was going for.

I think this is a very creative image and i like the way two images have been combined into one. i wouldn't use this idea as my front cover but the effects used... e.g. the brightness and contrast appealed to me.

I love the way a shadow has been included in the background, i think this is really effective. The top picture shows him as a very normal average person but then the shadow explains him more detail. i think this is clever and works really well. i also like the layout of the page and the colours used. its a simple design however it appeals to the audience as it is creative.

This image works really well as one image is blurred into another which makes the picture become quite misterious. The black and white effect also adds more emphasis to the picture and higglights key features in the picture, in this case the women. i liked this idea and am considering using a similar idea as one of my images.

I liked the creativity behind this picture. its very unique and the paintings on her face add that extra effectivness. i also like the way her hair is wet as if shes not got ready, however her face has been painted. it contrasts two looks which makes the picture simple and unrealistic.

This is one of my favourite pictures and i designed my front cover image to be similar to this. its very natural and i like the way her body has been oiled in some sort of way so its looks shiny. this makes it look very effective. i also like the tattoo she has, although it is covered it adds extra detail to the picture. the slinky material she is wearin rnd her neck enables the picture to be less revealing and more professional.

coursework feedback

Title 'Hands up'

The class said this could be classed as more clubbing than trance, but as my magazine is based on a clubbers guide, and it is only a trance edition i feel happy with my title still.

Potential problems

Its a very niche market and to attract my specific target audience i will need to make the magazine look appealing and exciting. Also being able to achieve a good sell as most trance magazines are online. I feel i could achieve this aslong as i use a lot of colour and plan it well.

Magazine analysis

The mast head is featured at the top in bold, white writing, this makes it stand our more and grab the readers attention. They have also included a vinyl disc within the design of the title so it represents the elements of DJ'ing. The way the magazine is layered with a black and white background and a colourful top layer, helps to reflect the style of music that is being advertised. DJ's tend to mix up their music to make it random, like the patterns on the magazine. Random colours and patterns have been used in order ot make it more creative. The colours from the pattern also flow into the writing to link it all together so it looks more attractive. This also helps to attract their target audience as it is a young, modern design. The pattern covers most of the DJ's face, but the eyes and lips. This draws extra attention towards his features and makes you engage eye contact with him. This invites us in to read the magazine as he is looking straight at us. The use of superlatives and enigma codes within the text help to influence the audience to buy the magazine. For example 'who is the new king?' leaves us with a question which we want to find out, this will encourage the customer to pick up the magazine. 'The most exciting top 100 ever' suggests you can't get any better which would mean the reader would want to read 'the best'.

magazine covers and analysis

The mast head on this magazine is effective as it is simple yet stands out. The choice of colour used works well as it links in with the models clothing and makeup. This combines the cover together. the picture used is eye catching and is effective as it is reflected. This covers more of the front up which makes it look more bold. The model is also look directly out of the magazine to make eye contact with us which draws us in to read the magazine. The detail on the models face makes the front cover look more attractive to the reader. This will therefore draw more attention to the magazine. The text to advertise the contents is kept simple and is the same font throughout to keep a current theme. This works well as it keeps the attention on the picture which is the main focus.

The mast head on this works well as its simple yet has design in it. The circle on the I looks effective as its making it more creative and eye catching. The use of the colour white on the title works well as it enables the background and other text to stand out as well as making itself stand out. The picture/background used is very effective as the colours used work well together and make the cover stand out. Her modelling position and clothing is relevant as it follows the theme of dance music which makes the picture and context relevant to each other. As she is wearing a swimsuit this could fit into the 'Male gaze' theory and could be come provocative but as she is wearing sunglasses this reduces the sexually meaning as she is not gaining any eye contact with the reader. The text 'Ibiza' in yellow works really well as it stands out as another heading as it is trying to catch the attention of the reader. It also feeds in to all the subheadings down the side. This makes the magazine flow more and makes it easier to read. The theme is followed throughout, the colours are varied and used across the magazine cover. This spreads the magazine out so it takes all of the readers attention instead of taking the focus to a certain point of the magazine.

The background used for this cover works effectively as it splits the magazine into two which draws attention to both sides of the magazine. The use of the colour red on the mast head and on the subheadings are effective as it keeps the theme constant. The tie on the picture is also red which ties everything in together. This looks more presentable and would attract the readers attention. The black and white picture works well as it fits into the background as if its all in one. This makes the cover look neat and presentable. The way the text is positioned looks effective as it is slightly slanted so it adds more detail into the magazine to make it look less simple and more complex. Also the extra use of colour (orange) adds more effectiveness to the magazine as it makes it look more attractive. The use of the firework effect behind some of the subheadings works really well as although its simple it covers the blank spaces more and works as an extra feature for the subheading making it more noticeable.

This magazine is styled differently to DJ mags usual theme as it features a flag on the cover instead of a model. This works well it symbolises the contents and draws attention to the magazine as it is a common well known symbol. The way the flag is slightly rigid looks good as it then turns something that started simple into something more detailed. The colours stand out and work well together. It also ties in with the Mast head which looks effective as it is bold and outlined. The subheading featured across the middle draw attention the centre of the cover which is effective when catching the audiences attention. The subheading also relates to the picture which works well as it combines it together. The text is very simple and doesn't stand out as much as it should, however the picture would capture the audiences eye, which would then provoke them to read the text. The bursts of orange colour enables the audience to be draw to them, which advertises them better. For example the the chance to win a prize. As this is something to audience would like to look into it highlights this and it becomes more bold.
