Todays lesson

In today's lesson we all evaluated each others work and gave them feedback. We did this so we know what to improve on and to also get different opinions off different students.
My targets are to complete my article and to the correct register. I also need to make sure that i use the same use of fonts throughout so it follows the same theme. Especially the mast heads. I found out the simpler the font the more effective. I also need to consider a different style of image for my front cover as it is classed as inappropriate. This is because she is wearing very little in her photo, although i framed it so it does not fall into the male gaze theory, as she is looking away with her head down and is using her arms to cover herself. Therefore she is not inviting the reader in a seductive way. However people still might find this inappropriate as she is wearing little clothing. This image fits with the theme of trance and is suitable for the theme but is not seen suitable for an A level piece of work. A mid shot would look effective and i need to identify what style would look good and that would go with the theme of my magazine. A magazine we analysed today was framed well and had an inviting look. This is the look i want to create.

Warp records was founded in Sheffield in 1989 by Steve Beckett and the late Rob Mitchell, from their experiences working at the FON record store, alongside producer Robert Gordon. The label (whose name was chosen because the original name, 'Warped Records' was difficult to distinguish over the telephone) soon became home to artists who would be highly influential in electronic music.
The first album released by Warp was Sweet Exorcist's C.C.E.P. in 1991. In the same year Robert Gordon left Warp acrimoniously. Warp has worked with many artists including Maximo park, Lfo, Nice nice, Dj mujava, Vincent Gallo, Jamie Lidell, and Pivot.

In 1999 the label released Warp 10: Influences, Classics, Remixes, a compilation spanning six discs, featuring early acid house and techno music that influenced the label and its artists, as well as classic tracks from Warp's back catalog, and new remixes of Warp material. The collection celebrated the label's tenth anniversary.Later In 2000 the label moved its operation to London along with its physical music and merchandise store Warpmart. In 2001 Co-founder Rob Mitchell was diagnosed with cancer, He died later that year.

Warp films was set up in 1999 with funding from NESTA. It is based in Sheffield, England with a further office in London. At present there have been four releases on Warp Films: My Wrongs by Chris Morris, which won the Best Short Film award at the BAFTA Awards, and Shane Meadows's films Dead Man's Shoes and This Is England.

In April 2008, Australian film distributor Madman Entertainment announced "a collaboration" with Warp Films. Warp and Madman plan to make "at least 2 films together over the next 3 years."

Warp have recently created 'Bleep' which is a download store, where songs, albums, and tickets can be purchased and listened to.

Market Research

I will aim my questions at a target audience of 18-30 as this is the general age that tend to listen to trance music. It would be pointless me asking old aged people as they couldn'nt relate to this genre, and would therefore be a waste of time. I am going to present my questions on a sheet which i will give to out, i want the questions to be answered onnominously so that the answers are honest, and hopefully constructive. This way i can get more realistic feedback.

Mock up coursework

I am pleased with my first mock up of my front page. I like the background picture because it makes the writing and colour stand out more as it is black and white. I chose to photograph this picture in this style as many trance/dance/house/progressive music magazines and Cd's etc use tasteful pictures like the one above. As at most concerts their is a lot of jumping and dancing you get hot and sweaty which is why this theme of 'less clothing' is used. I told my model to stand to the side so the picture is less provocative and is not acting in the 'male gaze' theory, hence the reason she is not looking out making eye contact. I originally had the title of my magazine as hands up, but when designing the master head i found it took up too much of the magazine and the title 'UP' would look more effective. The word up symbolises the action of putting your hands up at a concert, people also tend to look up to the stage/set. When at a concert your mood and feelings also become happier, they go 'up'. I used a choice of three colours on the front because although dance music is usually a mixture of bright colours i didn't want the front of the magazine to look too over crowded. i desired it to be interesting but simple.

I chose to have a picture of Tiesto at the top on my mock up as i am hoping to get the same style of picture myself to use on my final piece. The effect on the picture also adds more detail which enables the contents to look more attractive. I also included a picture of a event in Goa which is very common for trance festivals. As i am including events in my magazine i thought this would attract the reader as everybody is interested in events. As my double page spread is on Georgina i thought it would be necessary to include on the contents page, so i chose a picture of her which is different to the one I'm using on the double page spread. I also like the black background on the contents and colour images and also colour text as at concerts/parties etc the lights are out and there is colour from strobe lights etc.

For my double page spread i chose to use the picture picture of Georgina's back as i think it is a creative picture and it grabs the attention of the reader as they turn the page. The master head 'Georgina' has green lines added into it, as it adds extra colour and it also looks quite tribal, which relates back to the Goa events. I left the right hand side black with one picture on because although the spread is on her, if i added to many pictures their wouldn't be enough room for a detailed interview.
